Jumping straight into the visuals of the game, Football Hooligans leans more into the hooligan side of things. This is established through the game’s symbols, which depict knives, knuckle dusters, pints of beer, cigarettes and an expansive collection of bald men. I thought it was quite strange that these men weren’t given names, not even in the paytable, so they are just nameless bald hooligans. These characters immediately made me think of classic British gangster films, which made the theme click for me.

My First Moments Playing Football Hooligans Slot
During my first moments playing Football Hooligans, it occurred to me that two things characterised the slot more than anything. These were the visuals and sounds of the slot that established the game’s atmosphere and aesthetic. The sounds didn’t click with me, but the visuals added a lot of excitement to the game.
Welcome to the Pub
When I first started playing the game, it was immediately apparent to me how well the slot sets the scene, depicting the slot in a local pub. This is done through immersive visual details, such as the bar, the TV in the corner with a game on, the menu stating they have loads of beer and plenty of bottles and pint glasses proving that. There’s even a scoreboard on top of the grid, showing the score of the classic game of ‘Blue’ vs ‘Red’. Of course these aren’t real teams, but this does make the experience more believable. This feature reinforces the theme, but more on that later on.
Whilst this is a more mundane theme than something like Ancient Egypt or adventuring through space, the developers clearly put a lot of time into designing the game. From the amount of detailed graphics, you can tell that they didn’t just do the bare minimum when illustrating the game and put thought and humour into it. This made my experience much more enjoyable, as I found it easier to connect with the game when I could tell that Round Circle cared about it too.
The Sound of the Underground
While I really enjoyed the visuals of Football Hooligans, I found the sounds a little jarring. To put it simply, there’s just a lot going on. The backing track is an entire song that has plenty of different parts to it, so you’ll never find yourself getting annoyed by repetition. However, the problem lies with the genre of music they’ve chosen for the game, as it is a heavy metal song. This does match the vibe of the visuals, but it made the slot overstimulating music-wise.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m partial to a bit of heavy rock as much as the next bearded guy, but Football Hooligans also tries to make the sounds of the game immersive to the pub environment. This includes raised voices, glass smashing, cheering and the sound of footsteps. This combination of noises definitely made it sound like a pub, but one on a match day that’s a little overcrowded. I found that this was overstimulating, but there’s no need to find somewhere else that’s quieter, as you can just mute the game.

Triggered randomly at any point during the game, a man in a balaclava will run up and throw a Molotov Cocktail at one symbol on the grid. All of these symbols on the grid will glow orange and then transform into wilds, possibly resulting in some large wins.
Have a Smoke Tw**? Feature
Another trigger that randomly occurs is the ‘Have a Smoke Tw**?’ feature, where the guy on the wild symbols appears and locks all the cigarette symbols in place on the grid. Then the slot spins again and if you hit another cigarette symbol, it repeats until you hit a combination without cigarette symbols. Once four additional spins occur, the game will implement a 2x multiplier. Then for each additional spin triggered, the multiplier will increase by 1x.
Happy Hour (Bar Pays for the Beer) Feature
Now it’s time to discuss the scoreboard sitting above the grid. Alongside the score, there is a timer which shows how long the game between ‘Blue’ and ‘Red’ has been going on for. This lasts 90 minutes of in-game time, with three to five minutes for extra time. While this is referred to as time in the paytable, it really depicts the number of spins you’ve made.
After 90+ spins, the Happy Hour feature will be triggered and you’ll be awarded an amount of free spins. Football Hooligans includes a scatter symbol that resembles a London underground sign with the word ‘Scatter’ in the middle instead of a destination.
