If you’re a bettor with some experience under your belt, you’ve probably had some funds that have been sitting in your account at some point. Before you make your first step towards the withdrawal process, these are unclaimed funds. But what can happen to them? What Are Unclaimed Casino Winnings?

Unclaimed casino winnings refer to any funds won at a casino that haven’t been withdrawn. This can happen for a number of reasons, but it is often completely avoidable. Thankfully, these are only likely to happen if you aren’t aware of them. More information in the following sections.

Why Do Casino Winnings Go Unclaimed?

The most common reasons for unclaimed winnings are positive account balances that have been completely forgotten, attempted withdrawals that expired due to incomplete Know Your Customer (KYC) checks and completely inactive accounts. This last one is particularly unfortunate because most casinos charge for player inactivity, so watch out for this!

Forgotten account balances are one of the easiest ways to forget to claim casino winnings, especially if it’s only a low amount. Casinos won’t penalise you for having a positive balance, but it’s always best to remember if you have withdrawable funds available.

Many casinos use KYC checks to verify your identity when you make a withdrawal. These protocols are in place to ensure that only you can withdraw your winnings, protecting your funds when playing online. However, due to the importance of these checks, they need to be completed before a withdrawal attempt can be processed. These checks will most likely be sent by email and can get lost in your inbox. When attempting to make a withdrawal, it’s always best to keep checking your trash and spam folders in your email so that you don’t miss a check.

As I mentioned earlier, inactive accounts are quite a nasty mishap if you forget to play at an online casino for a while. This is easily done, but casinos will most likely attach a fee to your account for the amount of time it remains inactive. If you’re looking to stop playing at a casino, always remember to close your account rather than just stop visiting.

Are Casinos Allowed to Keep Unclaimed Funds in Ireland?

Legally, online casinos aren’t allowed to simply keep any unclaimed money left in your account. You can rest assured that you won’t be charged if you have a positive account balance. However, fees can be attached to dormant accounts and expired withdrawal attempts. This can lead to casinos deducting funds from your unclaimed winnings.

Irish Gambling Laws on Unclaimed Winnings

Casino regulation in Ireland has just begun at the time of writing, with applications for licences currently in progress. The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI), the country’s dedicated gambling authority, is a new face on the scene. While the GRAI are not responsible for disputes between you and the operator, you can still contact them on their online form if the operator has breached the law, as operators still have to abide by the Irish laws on gambling. Each operator will have its own rules and regulations in place, so it’s always best to be fully aware of what your casino’s licence provider has implemented. It’s also worth mentioning that we do not recommend visiting a casino without a verifiable licence, as they aren’t required to have any protection in place.

What Happens to Unclaimed Winnings in Online Casinos?

Whilst casinos can’t keep your unclaimed winnings, there are policies and fees attached to specific types of unclaimed winnings. If you are inactive for an extended period of time, the casino may charge a percentage fee on your positive account balance. The specific amount of time depends on the casino, and you will be able to find this information on the casino’s terms and conditions page or by contacting customer support.

The way to avoid the inactivity fee is to close your account. Account closure won’t necessarily result in a fee, but some casinos may charge a fee if you have a positive account balance when you wish to close your account.

Lastly, casinos can keep your unclaimed winnings if you breach security protocols and the general terms and conditions. The main cause of this is bonus abuse, where certain players manipulate welcome offers to benefit from them multiple times. KYC checks and other security practices are in place to prevent this from happening, but if it does, it can result in a fee on all accounts involved, forced account closure, banning and potentially legal action.

What Happens to Unclaimed Lotto Jackpots?

Unlike Irish online casinos, the Irish National Lottery will retract unclaimed winnings. After 45 days of winnings not being claimed, the Irish National Lottery will try to get in touch with you repeatedly. If this goes on for 90 days or more and they still haven’t heard anything from you, then the National Lottery will move your winnings into a special reserve fund, which the company can use in accordance with the licence. Players who are looking to take part in the Irish National Lottery should familiarise themselves with this and the other terms and conditions of the draw, in order to ensure that they don’t miss out on some massive wins. I know I wouldn’t want to!

Our Expert's Opinion

What happens to your unclaimed winnings at casinos really depends on why they’re unclaimed in the first place and what you did to accrue that amount. If you’ve been a normal bettor and haven’t breached any of the terms and conditions and have a positive account balance, then you’re completely fine, and nothing will happen to your funds.

On the other hand, if you’ve stopped playing at a casino with a positive account balance or you have violated the rules at an online casino, you can expect a fee to be charged to your account and winnings.

Both are avoidable. When you want to leave a casino, make sure to close your account properly instead of just stopping play. This will mean that you’ll go through the casino’s closing policy and will be fully clued up on what happens to your positive account balance. Avoid breaking the casino’s terms and conditions, read them and follow them, and you won’t have any unpleasant surprises.
