Winner of the Open Championship 2025: Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler isn’t just in the form of his life; he is the ultimate form. As soon as he stepped onto the green of Royal Portrush for the final round of the 153rd Open Championship, he looked like he owned not only his space, but the entire course. Lo and behold, when the final putt was dropped, he made his dominance official for the fourth time in a major.

For the second time this year, Scheffler has remained poised, calm, and collected under pressure. Other competitors battled nerves, windy conditions, and the unpredictability of links golf; Scheffler, on the other hand, cracked on and dealt with the job at hand. A final round of 68 sealed his four-shot win over Harris English; during this process, he ingrained his name even deeper into golf’s history books.

Royal Portrush: A Course That Plays No Favourites

This Northern Irish links course offers an immensely tough challenge. With fairways exposed to the elements, relentless rough ground, and a handful of deceptive bunkers, Royal Portrush punished displays of impatience throughout the weekend. Alongside this vicious mix, though, there were harsh spiralling winds and temporary showers; it was a perfect combination for a birdie-fest.

Scheffler was in the eye of the storm, untroubled, indifferent to what was going on around him. Almost like a robot, he rode the winds with a breeze. Like a prowling cat, he picked his moments to strike, kept out of danger, and seemingly floated his way to victory. Other players tried to stake their claim by aiming for leadership glory, but ended up faltering on some bad holes. Scheffler (unsurprisingly) knew his destiny and took it in his stride.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

It has to be said, this wasn’t a one-off, and nor will it be, I’d imagine. Scheffler has four PGA Tour titles to his name this year, with his season being defined by unwavering ruthlessness and uniformity. He often breezes his way to a top-five finish even when not walking away with a trophy.

Having just won the Open Championship, Scheffler now is in ownership of four career majors: the 2022 and 2024 Masters, the 2025 PGA, and now The Open. Leaving just the U.S Open to complete his trophy set, I’d suspect he’ll soon start investing in some new glass cabinets. Reaching the career dream of a Grand Slam is becoming more and more lucid as time passes. In some ways, he’s inevitable. With the way he’s playing, I couldn’t see many punters interested in golf betting against this happening.

Skip the Fireworks

Scheffler revels in his dominance in an understated manner, mentioning before his win: “It’s like showing up to the Masters every year; it’s like, why do I want to win this golf tournament so badly? Why do I want to win the Open Championship so badly? I don't know because, if I win, it’s going to be awesome for two minutes.” He’s quiet in a bashful way, but devastating when he takes to the course.

The final stretch saw plenty of drama unfold, but it never felt like a shootout for Scheffler, as he marched slowly down the green; whilst others were wrapped up in the usual rimaroll of the tourney on the 18th, Scheffler found the green in two and delicately two-putted for a par, acknowledging the crowd with a half hearted hand in the air.

What’s Next?

With four wins under his belt this season, including two majors, Scheffler is a clear frontrunner for Player of the Year. In the FedEx Cup standings, he’s head and shoulders above everyone else. Having his name cemented at the top of the world rankings is a genuinely remarkable achievement, and with Scheffler being so nonchalant in his methods, it’s hard to tell if he even wants it.

The performance he put on display in 2025, both technically and mentally, has been reminding golf fans of prime Tiger Woods, outsmarting his opposition, and choking them with his relentless nature to be so consistent. There’s no pursuit of perfection evident in his game, but his dedication to being smarter than everyone else is clear as day.

You can bet Scheffler and his fans have 2026 circled on their calendars for the U.S. Open already, and bearing in mind the final round falls on his 30th birthday (21st June 2026), you’d be forgiven for feeling there’s yet more inevitability on the horizon.
