A lucky British Columbia resident has made history winning the largest ever lottery payout in Canada from a lottery ticket that was purchased online. The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) paid out a whopping CAD21 million on the 6/49 lottery.

The winner, who was identified as Bill Laharty from Nanaimo, a city on Vancouver Island, purchased his ticket in the 6/49 lottery earlier this month, from BCLC igaming platform, PlayNow.com.

Laharty, who digs hydro holes for a living, is known to his friends as “Hole Digger Bill.” He won the big prize drawn on Saturday, August 13. The odds of winning are 1 in almost 14 million.

“I checked my account and there were a lot of zeros and numbers and I phoned and they said I’d won,” said Laharty.

“It not only changes my life, it changes my family’s life, my friend’s life. It’s a lot of money. It’s more money than I’m ever going to need.”

This record win breaks the previous record of a win on an online lottery ticket by a lot. The previous record was also held by a Nanaimo resident who was paid out $7.6 million in December 2010.

Laharty has already been busy spending his newfound riches.

“I’ve already bought a couple of cars,” he admitted. “I haven’t paid for them yet, but I bought them. Two BMWs – one for me and one for my friend.”

He has plenty of other plans for the cash as well. Among them are retiring, travelling and purchasing a condo “somewhere exotic” such as the Philippines or Bora Bora.

In the 2015/16 financial year, the BCLC has paid out a total of $46.3 million in prizes.
