The National Basketball Association (NBA) has selected PlayON as its daily fantasy sports operator for major markets across Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Licensed in Ireland by the Office of Revenue Commissioners, in the UK by the UK Gambling Commission and in Australia by the Northern Territory Racing Commission, PlayON will become the Official Daily Fantasy Partner for the league. The multi-year deal has taken effect from the beginning of the 2017 NBA Playoffs.

“With basketball’s global appeal, we are always looking for new ways to bring authentic NBA experiences to our fans across the world,” announced Salvatore LaRocca, NBA Partnership, Global Partnerships. “Our partnership with PlayON provides us an opportunity to deepen our engagement with our international audience and bring these fans, closer to the game.”

Through this deal with the NBA, PlayON will gain official partnership status in European markets such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK; in Asia-Pacific markets including Australia, Japan and the Philippines and in Latin American markets such as Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.

“PlayON is delighted to be partnering with the NBA to deliver Official Daily Fantasy NBA games,” stated Killian Jones, founder and chief executive of PlayON. “The NBA’s global reach and fixture schedule make it an ideal fit for daily fantasy. We look forward to working closely with the NBA to deliver innovative sports entertainment experiences to basketball fans around the world.”

There has been some surprise in the industry that the NBA selected PlayON as their international partner over DFS giants FanDuel and DraftKings, particularly considering the 2014 deal that the NBA signed with FanDuel and which included the league taking an ownership stake in the company. However, being that FanDuel and DraftKings have only recently expanded beyond the US market, the International PlayON was an attractive option.
