Where to play?
Roulette is one of the most popular casino table games available and it has been popular since at least the 18th century. In fact, a very similar game was played in Italy and England in the 17th century, although the modern game of French roulette is known to have been played in casinos since the 18th century. American roulette is a variation of the game that was created at the time of the French Revolution when French immigrants came to the US.
The origins of the modern game of European roulette are not certain. Whether you take the origins of the game from only a few centuries ago or you trace the game back to gambling games played in the Greco-Roman period, one thing is certain – whether people spin their shields or chariot wheels to gamble or spin a casino wheel, spinning games are as popular now as ever.
How the Game is Played
Roulette is a casino table game that is made up of a spinning wheel with numbered slots and a table. A small ball is released into the spinning wheel and players need to bet on the number or group of numbers that the ball will land in when the wheel comes to rest. The markings on the roulette table represent the different bets that can be placed with single numbers, groups of numbers and colours available to choose from. To begin the game, players will need to place their bet or bets on the table. Multiple bets can be placed. There are typically ten bets available – five inside bets that are located on the inner section of the table and five outside bets that are located on the outer section of the table. Depending on the variation of the game you are playing, more betting options may be available. Once your bet is placed, you spin the wheel and wait for the ball to come to rest. You will be paid out for any wins.
Variations of the Game
From the original French roulette game, a number of variations have been developed, including the most popular European roulette and American roulette. The commonly played European roulette has a wheel with 37 numbered slots – the numbers 1 through 36, plus a single zero. There are five inside bets and five outside bets available. French roulette is distinct in that the table is labeled in French and there is an entire additional section of bets – the racetrack for announce bets and call bets. American roulette has an additional slot for a double zero. This also adds an additional outside bet to the bets that are available. There are many other variations of the game including roulette royale which offers a progressive jackpot side bet, as well as variations that are specific to online casino play such as 3D roulette and mini roulette. Some online casinos offer a whole suite of roulette games.
